Pros
- Portofino is cute but can be explored in half a day.
- Portofino is great. If you have a private speedboat.
- North are Ligurian beaches (a little on the pebbly side) and places like Portofino (which we did visit for a day on our honeymoon in 1990)
Cons
- A base can work for some of this - e.g. if you're in Portofino you could travel to Cinque Terre
- In Italy, Rome, Milan and these places were recommended Bellagio Lake Como, Cinque Terre, Portofino, Rap , Ischia, Sardinia.
- Portofino: Didn’t see the appeal. Overpriced restaurants, expensive designer shops, and overall just felt underwhelming. How many people really want to pay 7€ for gelato and shop at yet an other LV store?
- Portofino is nice to walk through, but very small and very polished.
- There is no beach (really–whatever is there is a postage stamp thing down a stairway that's impossible to get on) in Portofino... You can see all of Portofino in about 4 minutes... Food is overpriced and not great. The whole place is ver...

Portofino is overrated and I would skip it entirely. People only go there because of influencers and really the entire village, while cute, doesn’t have much to offer other than overpriced food and drinks. Views from Castello Brown are nice but you go there for a postcard shot and that’s about it. The cemetery behind St. George church is my favorite thing in Portofino. In the summer the place is packed with people, food is shite, aperitivo runs €18-20 a pop. Skip it.
Portofino over Genoa any day! Just left 3 days ago, it’s quaint streets and food options are okay but the grime and constantly being approached for money, often selling of trinkets is worrisome.
