I would recommend using a hard wax (osmo, Rubio monocoat) or 33% blend of hand rubbed poly, boiled linseed oil, and mineral spirits. This will give you a solid finish without the high-gloss

Yeah I've used Osmo on a lot of stuff and I like it quite a bit. Holds up great. Just do 2 coats and you should be good
