On the Oreck, those are only passable on low pile office carpet. Not great on deep pile. Basically a powerhead motor with a fan on it. IMO best for non residential use unless you need a 8 pound vacuum.
My best recommendation is venture through several thrift stores to find an old Oreck that you can bring to a shop that can do a repair between $100-$200.

I'd been wanting an Oreck for years as I'd heard they were like Legos. It's true. Not particularly sexy like an old Electrolux or Kirby but goddamn, this thing sucked the garbage out of my bedroom carpets and made my Dyson seem like an ineffective joke.
Yeah I don’t love the oreck at all but it was an improvement over the expensive ones that hardly worked.
