I've had good success with Oboz. They have a high wrap-around and stitched rand that helps protect the uppers from damage and a vibram sole. Rugged, rocky terrain hasn't been a problem for them (I'm in Colorado). If you are looking for a moderately priced boot, this is a good choice.

I have goretex models of Merrell and Oboz boots. They have served me well without water penetration as long as I didn't sink above the cuffs. They have all been durable across all types of terrain including snow and ice.
I put some superfeet hike cushion insoles into a pair of Oboz and it made a world of difference.
