Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Nothing But Blackened Teeth is a highly polarizing horror novella that receives predominantly negative feedback on Reddit. While some readers appreciate its creepy atmosphere, Japanese cultural details, and striking cover art, a significant majority of commenters find the writing style overbearing and the characters insufferable. The book is frequently cited in discussions regarding 'worst reads' due to what many describe as 'purple prose' that obscures the plot.
Pros
- Striking and widely praised cover art
- Very short length (novella) makes it a quick read
- Creepy atmosphere and setting (an abandoned temple)
- Interesting cultural details and a 'disturbingly playful' tone for some
Cons
- Overly dense, 'purple' prose that many find pretentious or distracting
- Highly unlikable and 'insufferable' characters with little development
- Confusing metaphors and similes that make it difficult to follow the action
- Unrealistic character dynamics and motivations
Caveats
- The author's distinct, highly stylized writing is often described as 'love it or hate it,' though Reddit sentiment trends heavily toward the latter.
- Many readers only finished the book because of its short length (approx. 2 hours for the audiobook).
Best for
- Readers who prioritize atmospheric horror and unique prose over character likability
- Those looking for a very short horror story that can be finished in one sitting
Avoid if
- You dislike 'thesaurus-heavy' or flowery writing styles
- You need relatable or well-developed characters to enjoy a story
- You prefer straightforward narrative clarity over abstract metaphors

It’s probably the worst book I ever finished (and I only did so out of morbid curiosity and the fact that it’s very short). It makes no sense why all these characters who clearly can’t stand each other would be such great friends that they’d all travel halfway around the world together. There’s no character development. The writing itself is clumsy. Just bad in every way.
Nothing but blackened teeth. Easily.
nothing but blackened teeth by cassandra khaw. very short though.
Parent context: It’s probably the worst book I ever finished (and I only did so out of morbid curiosity and the fact that it’s very short). It makes no sense why all these characters who clearly can’t stand each other would be such great friends that they’d all travel halfway around the world together. There’s no character development. The writing itself is clumsy. Just bad in every way. Reply: Exactly how I felt, the writing felt rushed and awkward at the best of times, and the characters were all one-dimensional. I don't mind unlikeable characters, but they just existed for the plot (which was eh anyway).
The main character is insufferable, rhe writing is laughably pretentious, the ghost was barely there- very little happened which generally I don’t mind but like I didn’t care about anyone. I’ve read 600 page books that seemed shorter than that slop.
It reads like a thesaurus was on speed dial at the expense of character development and plot.
The purplest of prose. My brother in Christ, put down the damn thesaurus and just tell me what’s happening!!!!!
Paper thin characters, pointless and meandering story, author has a distinct style of writing that veered into self parody. It was so painfully stylised that it became almost impossible to understand what was actually going on.
I felt like it was the unbearably purple prose that did it for me.
The prose, specifically the clunky and laughably ridiculous similes and metaphors, is what I remember hating the most. However, I remember also hating the characters and the plot. The characters in particular drove me crazy. All the characters in NBBT were neither. They were purely insufferable morons lol. It sucked on every level.
