this book was one of the scariest I’ve ever read, both the visceral terror of the basement and the overlying dread and anxiety of being in a desperate situation. That said, the second half (last third? It’s been awhile) was such a letdown, more so since the first half was SO GOOD.
This book shook me. I was a very young mom, scratching by with no child support in a big city. The sense of vulnerability and being trapped by poverty and circumstance was vividly reflected in this book.
It’s definitely my favorite of Nevill’s novels. Even the supernatural elements aside, every scene with those cousin antagonists just put my blood pressure through the roof.
This book fucks so severely hard. I agree that it's a tad too long; Neville does tend to repeat the same scenarios in different ways too many times before he decides it's time to move on and get crazy with the story. But, my god, if it wasn't one of the best reads of this year for me.

I loved No One Gets Out Alive. The two antagonists are such disgusting and pathetic people but they’re still creepy too.
I almost put this one down two thirds of the way through it’s 600 pages and I’m SO glad I didn’t. This was the first book I’ve read by Adam Nevill and I was pleasantly surprised at what a wild ride it ended up being.
