MG Motor is generally perceived as a budget-friendly entry point into the new car market, offering modern technology and attractive aesthetics at a lower price point than many competitors. However, the brand faces significant criticism regarding its long-term reliability and after-sales support, with many owners reporting difficulties in obtaining parts and long wait times for service.
Pros
- Highly affordable pricing for brand new vehicles with warranties
- Modern interior technology and features often found in more expensive segments
- Frequent model updates and releases that keep the lineup feeling current
- Lower insurance premiums compared to some other emerging Chinese brands
Cons
- Poor after-sales service and long wait times for maintenance appointments
- Significant issues with parts availability and supply chains
- Reported mechanical and reliability concerns, specifically noted with the MG One model
- Weak resale value as inexpensive new car prices drive down used market demand
- Underpowered engine performance in certain models
Caveats
- Some vehicles may require immediate dealer corrections for factory issues shortly after purchase
- Reliability is frequently cited as being lower than competitors like Geely or GAC
- Global reliability rankings (e.g., UK market) are sometimes cited by users as a reason for caution
Best for
- Budget-conscious buyers seeking a new car with a full warranty
- Drivers who prioritize modern tech and 'cool' aesthetics over mechanical pedigree
Avoid if
- Reliability and long-term durability are your primary concerns
- You cannot afford potential downtime due to parts shortages or service delays
- High resale value is a priority for your next vehicle purchase

I drive several rented MG, and they dont adjust driver seat. (Maybe because its a base base base trim - poor trim)
I feel the MG one has better seats.
For what it’s worth, I thought the build quality of the Jaecoo is far better than the MG.
MG (SAIC), Chery, and Changan are part of the Big 5 automakers in China, all state owned enterprise that would not fade away just like that.
MG is shite
currently driving a MG on rental which we love.
Upon checking, they told me they couldn’t even proceed to where the flywheel base is because there is visible rust around the outer area. Because of that rust, they immediately voided the entire transmission warranty, claiming it's environmental damage. They're saying that if they open it up, they are 100% sure the clutch pack and the flywheel base inside will be completely rusted out too. Then they dropped a casual 12,000 AED repair quote on me.
Another thing MG for me is not worth it, there service cost etc is super expensive. You have driven already 140K and the resell value is down already.
Parent context: Have an MG don’t really understand the complains for servicing Usually get a date for servicing with the next t 10 days Recommend mg 7 Reply: Yeah wait till you run into 1 issue. They make you run around in circles and beg them to fix your own car under their warranty and they NEVER understand the problem correctly.
MG service is always busy and long lead times
