Lexus IS 250
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Lexus IS 250 is a polarizing entry in the used car market, often overshadowed by its more powerful sibling, the IS 350. While it retains the Lexus reputation for long-term durability and a comfortable ride for four adults, it is frequently criticized for a specific engine design flaw—carbon buildup caused by its early direct-injection system. Enthusiasts generally view it as underpowered and difficult to modify, though some owners report high-mileage success with strict maintenance.
Pros
- Capable of high mileage (300k+) with meticulous maintenance
- Comfortable for hauling four adults for daily commuting
- Sporty aesthetic and premium brand appeal at a lower price point
- Generally reliable if carbon buildup issues are managed
Cons
- Notorious carbon buildup issues due to the direct-injection-only V6 engine
- Underpowered performance (approx. 200hp) described as 'slow' by many users
- Interior quality is frequently cited as poor or 'notoriously bad'
- Requires premium fuel to prevent engine 'gunking'
- Very limited potential for performance tuning or modifications
Caveats
- The IS 350 is almost universally recommended over the 250 for better reliability and power.
- Used models are often found in poor condition with 'half-assed' modifications or signs of abuse.
- Engine reliability is heavily dependent on the previous owner's fuel choices and maintenance habits.
Best for
- Commuters seeking a comfortable, entry-level luxury badge
- Buyers on a budget who prioritize brand name over performance
Avoid if
- You want a car that is fast or has tuning potential
- You want to avoid the maintenance headache of carbon cleaning
- You have the budget to step up to an IS 350

Those little v6s have an early iteration of directed injection that make them get gunned up easy if I remember correctly. That and amongst other issues just make it way less reliable. Also if you aren't pretty meticulous about running PREMIUM fuel only in the is250 it gets gunky even faster.
IS is definitely the more reliable and safer option but depend which one you buy. Given your budget, the best option is an IS250 which is ok. Preferably get the IS250 F Sport.
Just as an FYI, the IS250 is one of the lesser reliable Lexus models. It’s got a very common carbon build up issue.

personally like lexus is250 as an option
you can find a used Lexus IS250 or IS300 15-16k in ok condition if you're lucky. Though maintenance cost can be a bit higher than a Toyota or a Mitsubishi.

The mileage is low for sure but at being almost 20 years old there’s gonna be issues with the wiring/plastic hoses or electrical in the near future. In my opinion that car should be around $8k
This is250 listed is almost 20 years old and they want $16k lol
