Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The BYD Leopard 8 is a premium PHEV SUV frequently praised for its powerful performance, advanced tech, and exceptionally smooth, quiet ride. While many owners are impressed by its luxury interior and 'floating' driving feel, there are significant discrepancies in reported real-world range and air conditioning effectiveness. It is noted for being a heavy vehicle (approx. 3.3 tons) with a smaller cargo area than some traditional full-size competitors.

Pros

  • Powerful engine performance, particularly in the highly responsive 'Sport+' mode
  • Exceptionally smooth and quiet ride quality, often described as 'floating'
  • Premium interior quality and high-end features that rival luxury European brands
  • Advanced technology suite, including functional self-driving capabilities
  • PHEV flexibility allows the battery to charge via the petrol engine if home charging is unavailable

Cons

  • Real-world range reports vary significantly, with some owners getting only 600-850km compared to the advertised 1200km
  • High curb weight of approximately 3.3 tons, making it heavier than many class rivals
  • Smaller boot space and interior length compared to traditional SUVs like the Nissan Patrol
  • High battery drain observed when driving at speeds exceeding 100km/h

Caveats

  • Mixed reports on AC performance; while some owners find it excellent, others have reported issues with it not being cold enough
  • Insurance costs are noted to be relatively high, ranging from 7k to 10k
  • Being a newer model, some users view it as an 'emotional' purchase with limited long-term reliability data

Best for

  • Drivers seeking a tech-heavy, luxury SUV with a focus on comfort and quietness
  • Buyers looking for a powerful PHEV that can handle both urban commuting and off-road use

Avoid if

  • Maximum cargo capacity and interior length are top priorities
  • You require a lighter, more agile vehicle
  • You are strictly reliant on achieving the maximum advertised fuel range

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~383 days), which should be considered for a fast-changing automotive product.

Look at the Leopard 5 and 8. What they did is strip out features. Change radiator fan and coolant level. Increase the refrigerant level. Hardware wise its the same. Only thing it now come with a name of the agency.

New patrol is nice, but B8 is (subjectively) nicer and more modern. Nissan is on par quality wise with BYD and GWM, the Americans are a step down from the Chinese in my subjective opinion

For that money I’d go B8 100%. Or Tank 700

I liked that the middle row was a 3 seater More space in the back especiskg when the seats are folded up. Yes I need the space. The interior felt better albeit the rox was more comfortable. The tech was more in the leopard plus there's a community of owners who are ready to help when u get stuck. Power on the car is insane.
