HP ZBook Ultra G1a
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The HP ZBook Ultra G1a is a high-performance 14-inch workstation distinguished by its exceptional build quality and massive memory capacity (up to 128GB RAM), making it a niche favorite for local LLMs and heavy development. However, user experiences are heavily split due to significant power delivery quirks, modern standby issues, and incomplete Linux driver support for peripherals like the webcam and fingerprint sensor.
Pros
- Exceptional build quality with a full metal body and highly-rated keyboard feedback.
- Supports up to 128GB of RAM, which is rare for a 14-inch form factor.
- Quiet and effective cooling system even under heavy workloads like LLM inference.
- Strong audio performance from a four-speaker array.
- Excellent battery retention during suspension when working correctly (e.g., 3% drop overnight).
Cons
- Extremely finicky charging; frequently ignores adapters under 100W and oscillates with many third-party GaN chargers.
- Persistent Linux compatibility issues with the webcam and fingerprint sensor.
- Modern standby bugs, including a reported issue where the power button triggers while the lid is closed.
- Lack of a haptic trackpad and limited to a 14-inch display with lower brightness than some competitors.
- No discrete GPU option, relying entirely on integrated Ryzen graphics.
Caveats
- The laptop may straight-up ignore power sources less than 100W rather than slow-charging.
- Linux support is described as 'nearly perfect' by some but 'maddening' by others due to kernel patching requirements for the webcam.
- Users report that BIOS version 1.03 is particularly sensitive to specific USB-C cable and charger combinations.
Best for
- Developers and researchers running local LLMs or virtual machines requiring high RAM in a portable frame.
- Users who prioritize keyboard feel and chassis rigidity over screen size.
- CachyOS or Ubuntu users who are comfortable troubleshooting minor driver gaps.
Avoid if
- You rely on standard 65W travel chargers or existing third-party GaN power bricks.
- You require a large 16-inch display or a discrete GPU for gaming/rendering.
- You need out-of-the-box, flawless Linux support for all biometric and imaging hardware.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 396 days, which may mean some early Linux driver issues or BIOS-related charging bugs have since been addressed in newer updates.

webcam is still not working and getting the kernel patched never worked for me, but I'm quite the Linux noob.
wifi works great, suspension works the best I ever had, like i close the screen came back next day and laptop used only 3% battery and is ready to use in 2 seconds flat.
My worry is that literally with hp I’m getting less of a laptop just for the l extra memory. 14” with lower brightness compared to 16” tandem, no gpu, worse battery life, 2tb vs 4b etc.
On my new Zbook G1A running Ubuntu 25.10 the fingerprint sensor kept going offline after entering suspend, it would stop being available as an option to log in until I rebooted the computer.
There is a HP Zbook Ultra G1a, with Ryzen 395 Max+, which wipes the floor with 370. Unfortunately it's 14 inch.
Jamespo reminded me that hp zbook ultra g1a exists, there's currently one at B&H with 128GB and 2TB configuration for $2800 (wow!) and with that factor I guess it will be able to run more TDP without throttling.
I'm eyeing the HP Zbook Ultra G1A. Linux support appears perfect if not for the webcam which is working for some distrib (Ubuntu) and soon for the rest. Hardware looks solid - weak points might be the display and to some extent the trackpad (no haptic)
Works just fine except webcam.
Love it so far! Quick as hell.
The wifi seemed bad on Windows and Fedora, but has been fine since switching to CachyOS.
