Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The HP EliteBook is widely recognized as a high-quality, business-class laptop series, frequently recommended alongside Lenovo ThinkPads and Dell Latitudes for its durability and reliability. Users generally praise its superior build quality compared to consumer-grade laptops, making it a staple in corporate environments and a top choice for those seeking long-lasting hardware. While new models are often considered expensive, they are highly regarded as excellent values on the refurbished market.

Pros

  • Superior build quality and durability compared to HP's consumer lines
  • Excellent value and performance when purchased as a refurbished unit
  • Reliable for long-term use with support for modern operating systems and security updates
  • Keyboard design is preferred by some users over competing business laptops
  • High-end configurations offer impressive battery life and performance for productivity

Cons

  • Frustrating port layouts on some models, such as placing all USB-C ports on the right side
  • Questionable design choices, including awkward power button placement
  • Lack of dedicated GPUs makes them a poor choice for intensive gaming
  • Aesthetic complaints regarding keyboard layouts, specifically half-height arrow keys

Caveats

  • Internal maintenance requires caution; users report potential for sparks if the battery is not disconnected before RAM upgrades
  • High retail price for new units often pushes them out of budget for casual consumers
  • Gaming capability is limited to what integrated graphics (like Ryzen 5 Pro) can handle

Best for

  • Corporate and professional work environments
  • Students or budget-conscious buyers looking for durable refurbished hardware
  • Users who prioritize build quality and longevity over gaming features

Avoid if

  • You require a dedicated GPU for high-end gaming or video editing
  • You are a right-handed mouse user who is bothered by cables and docks occupying the right-hand side of the device

My current laptop has full arrow keys, and the Elitebook that I had previously did not. It's pretty gross aesthetically, but it wasn't too functionally different.

I was upgrading an HP EliteBook that had a similar metallic memory cover, and I did NOT disconnect the battery and when reinstalling, I ended up seeing a bit of sparks. It still worked fine, but the next time I re-installed the old memory, I disconnected the battery.

I was able to find a 2016 i5 Elitebook with 16GB RAM for $200 - if he tries hard enough, he can pull it off with that money

Currently, I have an HP EliteBook and am looking for an upgrade. ... I don't see a big difference between my current laptop and the Omnibook.

I personally use an HP Elitedesk mini and I'm very satisfied, so I suppose that HP Elitebook should be as good.

The higher-end business line 2-in-1 laptops (Dell Pro Plus/Latitude 7 series, HP Elitebook) tend to have stronger metal and metal hinges.
