Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Hoover is generally perceived as a budget-tier brand with a stark divide between its legacy reputation and modern product quality. While its commercial models and bagged vacuums are occasionally recommended for their repairability and value, many users in the vacuum community view their modern consumer-grade bagless units as cheaply made and prone to mechanical failure.

Pros

  • Replacement parts are widely available and often stocked by repair shops.
  • Bagged models are significantly better regarded than their bagless counterparts.
  • Commercial-grade backpack and upright models are noted for providing good value.
  • Specific models feature sealed systems and lifetime belts which improve durability.

Cons

  • Modern consumer units are frequently described as having poor build quality.
  • Brush rolls are prone to hair wrap that can eventually melt the brush ends.
  • Hoses have a reputation for failing or cracking near the hand grip after a few years.
  • Bagless uprights are often cited as being difficult to maintain and frustrating to use.
  • Filtration performance is generally considered mediocre compared to premium brands.

Caveats

  • Users note that the Hoover brand name has been sold and the current products do not reflect the high-quality standards of older legacy machines.
  • The brand is frequently grouped with other budget labels like Bissell and Dirt Devil as a 'low-tier' option.

Best for

  • Budget-conscious buyers looking for a repairable bagged vacuum.
  • Users who need a low-cost commercial or backpack vacuum for large areas.

Avoid if

  • You require high-efficiency HEPA filtration.
  • You are looking for a long-lasting, high-performance bagless upright.
  • You are comparing it against premium brands like Miele or Sebo.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about an 18-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~436 days), which is relevant for a stable brand but may not capture the performance of the most recent model iterations.

I bought a bagless upright Hoover, which is what we currently use. I intensely dislike it.

Of the models you've shared, the hoover thing is the only one with a powerhead. I would not recommend that hoover for a number of reasons. Quality, performance, maintenance etc. The brushes on them gather hair in the ends, which is difficult to clean out, and eventually builds up and melts the brush ends. Really not good. And the hoses tend to fail after a couple years near the hand grip.

I went with a Hoover brand, as I can get replacement parts and the vacuum repair store recommended it.

I went from a bagless Hoover that my ex wife swore by to a bagged Miele. Night and day…

Parent context: That is true. However I have heard that the spray stuff is quite good at cleaning carpets in general. And currently is dont really like my current hoover (hoover branded one). We got it before having a pet and its not a pet vacuum. It works well enough, it just needs emptying out quite often. Reply: And currently is dont really like my current hoover (hoover branded one). Parent context: Ehhh it’s more like a loud minority, I’ve had mine for 3yrs and abuse the hell outve it and it still isn’t broken. The hoses are available all over eBay too if it ever comes to that. The Hoover has no notable issues but the filtration isn’t the best. Reply: The Hoover has no notable issues but the filtration isn’t the best.

If you're looking to go cheaper than that you're stuck with Bissell/Hoover which are generally considered bad in todays market.

Any specifics on models like Bissell or Hoover that handle thick carpets without leaving residue.
