Reddit take

Not enough linked mention summaries yet; the source excerpts below are the evidence.

Pros

  • the top music publishers for piano include Hal Leonard, Alfred, Faber, Henle. Out of all those publishers I would only call Henle good.
  • Henle generally has the best and most accurate editions.
  • Henle is recommended for most Urtexts, and the Etudes actually has the benefit ofa double fingering- Chopin's AND editor's.
  • Henle as urtext because I love the off white or the pages, pagination is awesome with well though spacing and end of pages to facilitate page turning when possible.
  • Otherwise for most things Henle is usually what most people go for first.

Cons

  • With Henle I think they all need to add a (+1/-1) to them. So a henle 6 will be 5-7 in reality.

I love Henle and Baerenreute editions for their editorial standards, and they produce clear, gorgeous volumes.

I myself have found Henle very reliable, with very high print quality, with very high "book open" quality, trustworthy academic background, etc.

Barenreiter for Bach, Henle for Mozart, Chopin national edition for Chopin.

Henle editions feel high quality and the off white paper is nice

When I picked it up, I assumed they were likely used and marked up. Then I inspected them back home and realized how mint they were - not a single annotation or pencil mark.
