Hell House
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Hell House is a polarizing horror classic that offers a graphic, fast-paced alternative to more atmospheric haunted house stories. While many readers praise its pulpy energy and interesting use of parapsychology, it is frequently criticized for being 'sleazy' and 'dated.' Opinions are sharply divided between those who enjoy it as a fun, 'A-tier' genre staple and those who find its fixation on sexual violence and anatomical descriptions to be 'trashy' or distracting.
Pros
- Fast-paced and 'fun' compared to slower, more subtle haunted house classics.
- Interesting exploration of parapsychology and well-written seance scenes.
- Highly regarded audiobook performance.
- Considered a significant and noteworthy novel in the history of the horror genre.
Cons
- Graphic and 'sleazy' content that some readers find off-putting or 'gross.'
- Repetitive and distracting fixation on female anatomy and sexualized violence.
- Dated portrayals of characters and sexuality, including 'weirdly aggressive' subplots.
- Can feel 'over the top' or 'silly' rather than genuinely scary to modern audiences.
Caveats
- The book is described as highly divisive; readers often either love the pulp or find it 'unreadable.'
- Some readers found the plot difficult to follow or felt the story 'went off the rails' toward the conclusion.
Best for
- Fans of 1970s pulp horror.
- Readers who found 'The Haunting of Hill House' too slow or boring.
- Those interested in the history and evolution of the haunted house subgenre.
Avoid if
- You are sensitive to graphic sexual violence or 'prurient' content used for shock value.
- You prefer psychological horror over explicit, 'sleazy' descriptions.
- You are bothered by dated or sexist character writing.

Hell House has several such scenes.
A/B-Tier Richard Matheson - Hell House
Hell House is fun enough, but also really sleazy and gross. ... the book just reads like prurient trash.
Matheson for the win.
Hell House is a fun haunted house story. It's Haunting of Hill House for people who found that book boring
Looking back, I do have better memories of Hell House though. The audiobook performance was also fantastic.
I prefer Hell House, but Ghost Story is still excellent.
Personally, I had more fun with Hell House but felt Ghost Story was the better novel.
Parent context: I generally enjoyed Hell House with the exception of the weirdly aggressive lesbian lust side story. Reply: I can't think of Hell House without laughing about that. "Weirdly aggressive" is right.
