I typically enjoyed the old show. It was highly entertaining, got away from the traditional model of a cooking show (in a good way), and is the first cooking show I know of to bring food science into the spotlight. ... However, it was one of those things that was great until unless it wasn't. Alton often had to do something differently just for the sake of doing it differently, no matter whether it was any good. Many recipes he gushed about weren't even tested (a fact he's admitted). Some were so terrible that it would be laughable if it didn't cause many viewers to waste their time and money on trying untested, crap recipes.

Honestly I like Alton Brown. You can't beat puppets and cartoons to teach. There are like 15 seasons of Good Eats.
For beginners, the most common recommendation is Alton Browns Good Eats series, which you can watch or read — the books are usually in the library or available used (and in ebook format) the shows are on TV or Prime
