Gone to see the river man - most of the book takes place while hiking through to the woods in search of the river man. Has some gore but I didn't find it to be central.
Give the rest of Kristopher Tirana’s catalog a try. Gone to See the River Man is one of my favorites
I recently read Gone to see the River Man and there’s no animal cruelty in it but it does have SA.
