Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Peter Straub's Ghost Story is widely regarded as a high-tier horror classic, frequently praised for its superior writing and atmospheric depth compared to other genre staples. While many readers consider it an all-time favorite, it is characterized by a deliberate, slow-burn pace that often requires significant persistence to overcome a difficult first half.
Pros
- Exceptional prose and literary quality.
- Highly effective atmospheric tension and 'creep factor'.
- Rewarding payoff for readers who stick with the slow-building narrative.
- Regarded as a superior, more sophisticated novel than many contemporary horror peers.
Cons
- Pacing can feel dated or excessively slow, particularly in the second half.
- Main characters are sometimes viewed as frustrating or prone to making 'stupid mistakes'.
- Initial chapters can be difficult to engage with, leading some to DNF (did not finish).
Caveats
- Many readers report needing to 'grind' through the first 25% to 50% of the book before it truly clicks.
- The narrative complexity can cause some readers to feel they are 'losing the thread' early on.
Best for
- Fans of literary horror and slow-burn storytelling.
- Readers who prioritize atmosphere and writing quality over fast-paced action.
- Those looking for a classic 'lupine thriller' or traditional ghost story vibes.
Avoid if
- You prefer fast-paced, high-action horror novels.
- You have little patience for long setups or 'dated' narrative structures.
- You are easily frustrated by characters who make questionable decisions.

The whole story with Gregory was so chilling, my favourite part of the book too! The bit in the schoolhouse was so creepy.
Ghost Story by Peter Straub.
Read it as an adult and it's one of my all-time favorites.
Peter Straub's Ghost Story was written in the literary tradition; I don't love it personally but it's highly thought of by many others.
Awesome book!
I’m one of the people always recommending this book. There’s a scene in it that scared the hell out of me. I couldn’t put the book down and wound up reading this scene in my bed around midnight.
Loved that book, gave it a 4.5 🥳 Gregory was so creepy, especially in the beginning
Ghost Story for me is one of those books where I don't understand the hype. I didn't hate it, just found it a bit meh. Couldn't even tell you a basic gist of what happens in the book because it didnt land with me at all
One of my favorites. I saw the movie before I read the book so I had a very different idea of Alma. The book was much scarier.
This one was a DNF for me unfortunately.
