Love that area of the big island but hualalai has gone downhill.
My experience with Hualalai - service is a bit generic. And yes, food wasn’t good. But Big Island is not known for food. Rooms wise, I thought quite nice especially ground floor with outdoor showers, ocean facing, but overall experience could have been better
We also felt very meh our last time to hualalai. More like a Westin than a FS.
The fs hualali is very busy, we got a free upgraded to a suite by booking with Sara as well as breakfast which was nice. Resort was very nice but overall didn’t feel like a fs. The housekeeping was horrible and turn down service was basically non existent. The food also was extremely disappointing.

Recommending the Big Island in Hawaii, and specifically the FS Hualalai; it would be perfect for a birthday celebration. For us, it was the right balance of relaxing (beautiful pools, beachfront, spa, amazing dining) and activity. ... It was a 10/10, no notes trip for us.
I would not go to FS hualalai during the festive period. We were there last thanksgiving and the dip in experience Vs our prior stays in non peak weeks was shocking. The main issue is they are the de facto rec center for the large housing development next door (and their air bnb guests).
I think the FS Hualalai is a great contender for what you're looking for here (and much nicer in most aspects).
