Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Ford Ranger is widely regarded as a durable, body-on-frame midsize truck that excels in towing, off-roading, and general utility. While older models are celebrated as 'bulletproof' budget beaters, newer versions are praised for their solid infotainment and reliable EcoBoost engines. However, interior space is a consistent drawback, with users frequently noting cramped cabins and small rear seats compared to competitors.

Pros

  • High towing and hauling capacity for its class due to body-on-frame construction.
  • Strong off-road capability, especially compared to unibody competitors.
  • Reliable engine options, specifically the 2.3L EcoBoost and older pre-2010 powerplants.
  • Easy to maintain with widely available parts and repair tutorials.
  • Modern tech features in newer models, such as 360-degree cameras and updated infotainment.

Cons

  • Cramped interior space, particularly in the rear seats of newer models.
  • Older models are described as 'absurdly small' inside, feeling like a 'clown car' for multiple adults.
  • Can 'nickel and dime' owners with small domestic truck repairs as they age.
  • Stiffer ride quality compared to unibody vehicles like the Honda Ridgeline.

Caveats

  • Used market prices for older Rangers can be surprisingly high due to their popularity.
  • Fuel economy is mixed; some users find the 4-cylinder models get similar mileage to V8 sedans.
  • Finding older models with manual transmissions in good condition is increasingly difficult.

Best for

  • Drivers needing a 'real truck' for towing or plowing in a midsize footprint.
  • Off-road enthusiasts.
  • First-time vehicle owners looking for a platform to learn DIY maintenance.

Avoid if

  • Rear seat passenger comfort and legroom are primary requirements.
  • You prefer the smoother, car-like ride of a unibody SUV or truck.
  • You are a very tall driver looking for a spacious cabin in older model years.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~289 days), which may not reflect the very latest model year updates, though the truck's reputation remains consistent across generations.

For example, an older Ford Ranger with lower miles would not be a bad option.

You probably won’t find a new style Ford Ranger for that price, but I loved the 2020 I had.

Ford Everest is based on the Ford Ranger, which has been very tough and reliable in other markets.

Assuming you’re not looking at the raptor, the new rangers have been solid for the last few years.

The Ranger is similar enough in every way to be a toss up.

Specifically- Crown Victoria (and It’s counterparts), Chevy S10, Ford Ranger are the KINGS of $5000 beaters. My personal choice would be the Ranger or S10.

look for older manual Civics or Accords, Mazda3s, Miatas or even a basic Ranger since parts and tutorials are everywhere.

remember the ranger is a RWD Truck platform (body on frame), vs Ridgeline is a unibody (frame integrated into cockpit) so the Ranger will be a much stiffer frame for hauling and towing. The ranger is an actual truck while the Ridgeline is more of an SUV with a bed.

Cab/ backseat of ranger is definitely smaller. ... Ranger has better infotainment. Ranger tows more. Ranger can plow, Ridgeline can not. Ranger can handle serious offroading.
