Ford Focus

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Ford Focus is a vehicle with a starkly divided reputation based on its production year and transmission type. While models from 2005–2011 are frequently recommended as reliable, budget-friendly 'econoboxes' sharing Mazda drivetrains, the 2012 and newer models are widely warned against due to catastrophic failures of the 'PowerShift' dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Pros
- 2005–2011 models are noted for reliability and affordable pricing.
- Manual transmission versions avoid the most significant mechanical failures of later years.
- Hatchback variants provide good modularity and utility.
- Older models benefit from a drivetrain shared with Mazda.
Cons
- Severe and frequent failures of the PowerShift dual-clutch automatic transmission in 2012+ models.
- History of transmission-related lawsuits and early failures (often before 100k miles).
- Reported issues with throttle bodies and motor mounts.
- Susceptibility to rust or bubbling on rocker panels in older units.
Caveats
- Reliability ratings for this vehicle are highly year-specific; 2011 models are generally viewed positively while 2012+ models are viewed very negatively.
- Automatic versions of the 2012–2016 range are described by some as almost guaranteed to fail.
Best for
- Budget buyers seeking a 2005–2011 model.
- Drivers comfortable with a manual transmission.
- Commuters looking for a cheap, small hatchback.
Avoid if
- You are considering a 2012 or newer model with an automatic transmission.
- You want a vehicle with a high-reliability automatic gearbox.
- You are looking for a used car in the $8k range, which is perceived as overpriced for this model.

2007-2010 Ford Focus.
ford focus is tempting at that price but stay away from the automatic ones 2012-2018, the transmission is a nightmare.
Look up ford escape and ford focus transmission lemons. It’s not about just brand loyalty. Ford literally sold a vehicle engineered with a flawed Transmission because reengineering everything from the machine molds of the transmission to the car plastics was too much money once they realized it was flawed.
Also I just stated considering 2011 or pellet focus ... cuz apparently their engines are actually legit. Transmissions can be iffy depending on which on but not the worst.
Or a manual Ford Focus, same reason that their autos are shit.
a manual transmission ford focus (certain years)
GMC Acadias and Chevy Cruze/Ford Focus are still the worst.
A friend of mine replaced a 3 cylinder engine in her focus (fortunately she had an extended warranty). These engines are not reliable.
Stay far away from the 2012-2018 Focus/Fiesta. Just google DPS6 transmission.
Those were really good cars with the unfortunate exception of that horrible transmission.
