AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Ford Escape is a polarizing compact crossover on Reddit, with sentiment heavily dependent on the specific model year. While older generations (particularly 2009–2012) are praised for longevity and value, newer iterations face criticism for reliability issues and poor resale value compared to Japanese competitors like the Toyota RAV4.
Pros
- 2009–2012 models with the 2.5L engine are noted for high-mileage durability
- Generally more affordable purchase price than Toyota or Honda equivalents
- Widely available parts for repairs and maintenance
- Considered a solid option for city and freeway driving
Cons
- Reported transmission issues, specifically in 2015–2016 models
- Significantly lower resale value than competitors
- Potential for catastrophic engine failure in certain high-mileage units
- Visibility can be difficult for shorter drivers (e.g., 5'2")
Caveats
- Reliability is highly inconsistent across different generations and engine types
- Maintenance history is a critical factor for used purchases to avoid known issues
- Parts can be surprisingly expensive when major components break
Best for
- Budget-conscious used car buyers
- Drivers specifically seeking the 2009–2012 generation
- Commuters looking for a standard compact crossover
Avoid if
- You prioritize high resale value
- You are considering a 2015–2016 model year
- You have difficulty with visibility in compact SUVs

If they let you get the PPI and everything checks out though, this Escape would probably be a really good deal.
The Escape is fine and Nissans are junk except for their sports cars and trucks.
The Ford Escape from that era was pretty sweet and probably worth looking into.
2008-2012 FWD Ford Escape or Mazda Tribute (same thing)
i just bought a luxury trim one with 90k miles for 8k, 10500 for 160k miles feels high to me
Look up ford escape and ford focus transmission lemons. It’s not about just brand loyalty. Ford literally sold a vehicle engineered with a flawed Transmission because reengineering everything from the machine molds of the transmission to the car plastics was too much money once they realized it was flawed.
Black Ford Escape in excellent exterior condition. This is a sharp, well-kept crossover with a glossy black finish, silver multi-spoke alloy wheels, roof rails, and chrome accents. Body looks straight with no major dings or scratches visible in photos.
You don't need to try and convince me that your Mazda 3 is going to keep up with my Ford escape all wheen drive or my ram in 4x4. I've pulled enough people out of snow banks to know what option is better.
The Escape unfortunately isn't worth much as a trade in, might as well hang onto it.
Something like a 1-3 year old used CRV will command premium pricing as opposed to say a 1-3 year old Ford Escape.
