FantasticLand by Mike Bockoven is a highly recommended horror novel, particularly praised for its 'mockumentary' style consisting of a series of interviews with survivors. The story follows theme park employees trapped in a Florida park after a hurricane, depicting their descent into madness and a violent survival situation. It has earned a cult-like following within horror communities, often compared to World War Z and Devolution for its structure and tone.
Pros
- Excellent audiobook production featuring both male and female narrators
- Unique and engaging 'oral history' or interview-based storytelling format
- Effective 'creepy' atmosphere and compelling survival horror plot
- Strongly recommended as an entry point for those new to the horror genre
Cons
- The interview-based structure may be polarizing for readers who prefer traditional narratives
- At least one reader found the execution significantly lacking, rating it 1.5/5
Caveats
- The book focuses on human madness and survival; it is not a supernatural or haunted attraction story
- Frequently compared to Yellowjackets and World War Z, which may set specific stylistic expectations
Best for
- Audiobook enthusiasts
- Fans of epistolary or mockumentary-style fiction
- Readers who enjoy survival horror and social collapse themes
Avoid if
- You dislike non-linear or interview-heavy storytelling
- You are specifically looking for supernatural or paranormal horror

Fantasticland is exactly what you want. An amusement park isolated by a hurricane an the chaos that ensues.
Agreed. FantasticLand and Devolution are some of my all time favorite horror novels.
I’ve finished probably less than 15 audiobooks in my life and some of my faves were: Fantasticland
Fantasticland - Mike Bockoven Reply: I think this was recommended through a previous post and I checked it out. It was an amazing narration!
I’m reading *FantasticLand* now and digging it. It’s Lord of the Flies meets Battle Royale and I haven’t picked up a deep, underlying message. A few scenes have been really good.
I am currently listening to FantasticLand and loving it.
Fantasticland by Mike Bockoven got me into horrorlit so that’s always my go-to. It’s a found footage type read about what happens when employees are trapped in an amusement park after a hurricane.
Just finished Fantasticland this week and it's the front runner for my favorite book of the year.
Fantasticland has strong LOTF vibes. Very much enjoyed it
