Carrion Comfort
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Carrion Comfort is widely regarded as a dark, epic horror masterpiece centered on the concept of "mind vampires." While it is frequently praised for its terrifyingly realistic sociopathic antagonists and intense, action-movie-like pacing in its best moments, it is also notorious for its extreme length and significant pacing lulls in the middle sections.
Pros
- Features exceptionally memorable and "merciless" antagonists.
- Highly intense and "epic" scale that blends horror with action-thriller elements.
- The audiobook version is highly recommended for its dual narrators.
- Contains specific chapters (notably the Dr. Laski chapter) cited as top-tier horror writing.
Cons
- Significant bloat; many readers feel the 800-page count could be reduced by 20-40%.
- The middle third of the book is often described as floundering or dragging.
- Includes "Tom Clancy-ish" military subplots that some horror fans find distracting.
Caveats
- The book is described as "mean" and "evil," featuring some of the most despicable characters in the genre.
- Some readers suggest skipping the author's 20th-anniversary introduction due to his personal tone.
- The writing style reflects a gritty, late 70s to early 80s aesthetic that may feel dated to some.
Best for
- Fans of long, immersive horror epics.
- Readers who enjoy psychological horror involving mind control and sociopathic villains.
- Those looking for a "mean" and intense reading experience.
Avoid if
- You prefer fast-paced, concise novels.
- You dislike military-style technical details or action-thriller tropes in your horror.
- You are sensitive to extremely dark, cynical character perspectives.

And am currently revisiting Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons
Currently reading (listening to) Carrion Comfort, and can honestly say that the Dr. Laski chapter (6) is some of the best horror writing I have ever experienced.
*Carrion Comfort* was pretty damn good, though a little bloated.
People usually love Carrion Comfort. It was good, but we read it in my book club and the club really didn’t like it, which swayed my enjoyment a bit.
CARRION COMFORT by Dan Simmons. Mind Vampires.
Carrion Comfort almost like an action movie IMO
Carrion Comfort, by Dan Simmons
Carrion Comfort is pretty fantastic, too. Another thick book. Has one of the best beginnings.
