Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Burgundy is a highly polarizing wine region characterized by extreme quality variance and premium pricing. While enthusiasts describe its best offerings as 'ethereal' and 'world-class,' the prevailing sentiment on Reddit is one of frustration regarding the high frequency of 'expensive disappointments.' Many users consider it the most overrated wine region due to the risk of paying hundreds of dollars for inconsistent or mediocre bottles.

Pros

  • Produces 'ethereal' and 'earthy' wines that are considered world-class at their peak
  • Strong focus on terroir-driven experiences
  • Some users find middle-range bottles superior to Napa equivalents in terms of value

Cons

  • Extreme price-to-quality inconsistency; high risk of buying 'plonk' at luxury prices
  • Average winemaking standards are often criticized as poor relative to the land's prestige
  • Prohibitively expensive for the average consumer
  • High frequency of 'expensive disappointments' compared to other regions

Caveats

  • The region's reputation for inconsistency is often attributed to the difficulty of the grape and varying producer standards
  • Recent trends suggest a potential dip in secondary market values as buyers reach a price ceiling

Best for

  • Wealthy collectors seeking peak terroir-driven Pinot Noir
  • Enthusiasts who prioritize the 'highs' of wine over consistent value

Avoid if

  • You are looking for 'bang for your buck' (Rhône, Oregon, and Austria are suggested alternatives)
  • You have a low tolerance for inconsistent quality in expensive purchases

I love Burgundy, but it’s Burgundy. I recall Peter Koff MW saying “I can’t think of any other region the entire world where the average standard of winemaking on such unbelievably expensive land is so bad”. This is not to say the highs aren’t very high indeed, but when a region begets so many expensive disappointments how can it not be ‘overrated’?

Toss up between Napa and Burgundy, but seeing as I’m in Europe it’s definitely Burgundy. Ridiculous prices even for the average wines.

I think the best part of burgundy wines is the terroir aspect, and the inconsistency is because of the grape. You can find so much better bang for your buck in Rhône if terroir is your thing.

I am addicted to red Burgundy, that ethereal, tense, earthy magic that makes everything else feel a bit, loud.

Although the recent dips in secondary market value for Burgundy are a welcome sign that there’s a point at which even these people say “Thanks, but no thanks.”

Glad you enjoyed! Northern Rhône is a favorite. And it doesn’t disappoint nearly as often as burgundy

Parent context: Haha yep. My first few times seeing it I’d be like “oh Burgundy! This is supposed to be really good wine!” First bottle was great. Then after that it was so all over the place I just stopped wasting my money on it. Reply: Haha yep. My first few times seeing it I’d be like “oh Burgundy!
