Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The BMW X5 is widely regarded by owners as a benchmark luxury SUV, frequently praised for its superior driving dynamics and the reliability of its B58 inline-6 engine. While it is noted for a comfortable suspension and high-quality infotainment, the consensus highlights a high total cost of ownership driven by steep maintenance fees and rapid depreciation.

Pros

  • The B58 inline-6 engine is highly regarded for its performance and reliability.
  • Excellent driving experience and handling compared to others in its class.
  • Comfortable suspension and high-quality interior tech/infotainment.
  • Versatile model range including PHEV and performance-oriented M50/M60 trims.
  • Strong brand loyalty, with many owners repeatedly choosing the X5 as their primary SUV.

Cons

  • Significant resale value loss, with some users reporting up to $40k depreciation in just a few years.
  • High maintenance and repair costs, especially for out-of-warranty vehicles.
  • Standard models may not include genuine leather interiors as a base feature.
  • Requires premium fuel and carries a price premium over competitors like Acura or Genesis.

Caveats

  • Older used models (4-5+ years) are described as very expensive to run without a warranty.
  • While the powertrain is considered solid, some users doubt the overall long-term reliability compared to brands like Acura.
  • Pricing can vary significantly between dealerships even in the same region.

Best for

  • Drivers who prioritize a 'benchmark' driving experience in a luxury SUV.
  • Those looking for a reliable and powerful modern engine (B58).
  • Buyers who prefer leasing or purchasing slightly used certified pre-owned vehicles to mitigate initial depreciation.

Avoid if

  • You are highly sensitive to rapid vehicle depreciation.
  • You are looking for a low-cost used SUV (older, cheaper models are considered high-risk).
  • You prefer the value-for-money or interior luxury style of competitors like the Genesis GV80.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 408 days, which may not reflect the very latest model year updates.

Get a 2022 BMW X5 with a B58 engine. Reliable and quick enough

Used BMW X5 or Mercedes GLS — at this budget these are older/higher-mileage(150k+), but the premium experience is real and appealing.

For the BMW, it's tempting to think of a 5 year old $35,000 X5 as a bargain because it was $70,000 new, but you need to think of it as a $45,000 car and not a $35,000 car. It may only cost you $35,000 to take it home right now and start driving it, but you'll need to mentally commit to that other $10,000 as the cost to keep driving it for four years.

My X5 was $12k and is a much nicer car than any $16k Japanese alternative, and even IF it costs me $4k I'm no worse off than I would be in a Japanese brand, and I got the better car.

X5 does everything a range would do while being more reliable, you might miss out on a few features but it’s way more forgiving on maintenance so it’s a better buy 100%

If driving fun is important to you get an X5 with air suspension and with or get non-run flat tires
