Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

AutoTrader is a well-established platform for used car discovery, frequently utilized by users for market price research and its ability to filter for private sellers. While it is praised for features like middleman payment services and title verification, private sellers have reported significant issues with fraudulent inquiries and a perceived lack of support from the platform when dealing with scammers.

Pros

  • Robust filtering options to distinguish between private sellers and dealers
  • Useful for cross-referencing market prices across a wide geographic area
  • Offers middleman services to handle secure payments and title transfers
  • Listing fees can lead to higher-quality, more serious seller leads compared to free platforms

Cons

  • Private sellers report high volumes of fraudulent messages and VIN-check scams
  • Inflexible refund policies even when sellers are targeted by bots or scammers
  • Private seller inventory is sometimes described as minimal compared to dealer listings
  • Search results may miss some entries found on competing sites like CarGurus or local marketplaces

Caveats

  • Private sellers should be wary of buyers requesting they use specific third-party VIN check websites
  • Users often find it most effective when used in conjunction with other platforms for full market coverage

Best for

  • Buyers looking for specific title types or private owner listings
  • Conducting national price comparisons for specific vehicle models
  • Users who want a managed payment and title transfer process

Avoid if

  • You are a private seller who wants to avoid high-frequency scam attempts
  • You are looking for a platform with a high volume of free local listings

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~420 days), so confidence is lower as the platform's scam prevention and features may have changed since the majority of these mentions.

I'm a private seller who posted my car there 9 days ago. I received multiple fraudulent messages that appear to be from real buyers until they asked me to sign up for some kind of VIN check website (different ones). ... I called Autotrader telling them that in 9 days, 4 different users attempted to scam me and demanded a refund. They refused and attempted to prorate my refund for the 9 days I used the service.

I’d use KeySavvy, drive caramel, autotrader, cars dot com, or private auto. For a small fee they handled the payment, ensure there’s not problems with the title, title transfer, and temporary permit for you. Makes the car buying process insanely easy.

Go to cargurus dot com, I guarentee you'll find the car you're looking for. Way better than autotrader!

Autotrader and Marketplace are the best options. Use your filters on Autotrader, and use your common sense on Marketplace.
